Winter is a tough time of year for the birds in our yards. Many of the sources of food consumed in the summer time are not to be found in the winter months. The berry bushes have ceased production, insects have gone out of site, and what food is left is often covered by snow or ice. So we look for ways to feed the birds in the winter time, and suet feeders are often a great choice.

Bird suet is a high energy food that is naturally suited for use in the winter time. The suet is made by rendering the fat from mutton or beef products, and is often mixed with other high energy foods like peanuts to create a high fat, high protein product that stands up well to the cold temperatures. Since it's common for naturally rendered suet to spoil at temperatures above 70 degrees its usually sold as a wintertime food. These days there are suet products that have been formulated to hold up better in the summertime, so you can use it year round if you like, but it's not all natural suet.  You simply put it in a suet birdfeeder and the birds love it.

Like many types of bird food that we put out, the local thieves like squirrels love it just as much as the birds, so we have to find ways to discourage them.  There are many types of squirrel proof feeders that are are on the market today, with spinning parts or moving doors that work to keep the squirrel out. Nature has provided its own ingenious solution. Over many thousands of years, peppers have learned to create capsaicin, which is the chemical that gives pepper their heat. But the birds have no ill effects from it, and will consume it with reckless abandon. But the heat of these pepper really affect mammals, especially squirrels.

This would lead us to try adding pepper to our suet to repel the ever present squirrels and rodents away from the suet feeder. With hot pepper suet the birds are unaffected, but the feeder pests can't tolerate it. You can get rid of the squirrels without expensive motorized feeders, just a little bit of nature.
